THE PAN AFRICAN ACUPUNCTURE PROJECT
This is an exciting project that EMPOWERS THE PEOPLE OF AFRICA to be able to treat the AIDS epidemic on their own. The Pan African Acupuncture Project is an all-volunteer health care systems project started in 2001, dedicated to making an impact against the devastation of the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Uganda has the highest population of AIDS orphans in the world, with over 1.7 million children having lost one or both parents to the epidemic. We have been operating in Uganda since 2003, in close cooperation with the Ugandan Ministry of Health and public health organizations in Uganda.

We train doctors, nurses, and traditional healers in basic acupuncture, following the "barefoot doctor" model from China, teaching medical personnel how to treat the most impactful aspects of AIDS, such as wasting disorder and digestive system failure, immune system debility and opportunistic infections such as respiratory and skin infections. The response so far has been overwhelming--patients' improvements have been comparable to patients who have access to anti-retroviral drugs (only 50% of AIDS cases in Uganda have access to those medications), without the side effects of those drugs, and healthcare workers are enthusiastically embracing the training and using it daily in their work. Acupuncture is a very cost-effective treatment method, but health care personnel need the training.
We have been so successful so far, that we have been invited to bring teams into Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Malawi by their respective governments, and negotiations are beginning with the government of Ethiopia.

We are licensed acupuncturists who donate our time and expertise to the Project, and we are completely self-funded through private donations. I am going on the December training trip to Uganda for 3 weeks, and I am over half way to my goal of raising $3500 for the cost of the trip. Please help!

The Pan African Acupuncture Project is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 charitable organization based in Brookline, Massachusetts. All donations are fully tax deductible. Please visit our website at PanAfricanAcupuncture.org.
